Roy’s Story

Roy was a previous consumer at SSILC who found work in an IT/reception position. He was then let go from the position due to down-sizing and reopened at SSILC a year ago. His goal was to find full-time work in an IT/reception setting. The facilitator and Roy updated his resume. Roy applied for jobs and received offers for interviews but did not secure a job. The facilitator and Roy practiced interview questions together. Roy was also practicing typing as he had all requirements for his Office Administration Certificate except, he needed a typing class. The facilitator purchased Roy the program that Sask Polytech uses through the Participant Support Fund. She was also able to get prior learning assessment & recognition covered so Roy could take his typing test. Roy successfully completed the PLAR and now has his Office Administration Certificate. Roy worked very hard and applied for many jobs and sent progress reports to his facilitator a few times a month. He also participated in SSILC’s Job Finding Club where his biggest success was gaining more interview experience. Roy had a job interview at Loblaws for a Safety Supervisor position with trucking. Roy has 17 years of experience in a very physical role in the trucking industry. He was unable to do that position anymore, but applied for this position, because it was a good blend of trucking and office experience. He interviewed for the job and was the successful candidate. He started the job near the end of May and has emailed the facilitator to let her know that it is going well. He will remain on her caseload for maintenance for a few months to ensure stabilization.
