Ruth’s Story

Ruth’s Success Story: From Refugee to Future ECE Professional and Business Owner

Ruth’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and a strong commitment to building a better future. After arriving in Canada as a refugee, she worked hard to overcome barriers, adapt to a new environment, and create opportunities for herself.

She reconnected with ESRP in January 2026 to pursue her Early Childhood Education (ECE) certification goals. Despite English not being her first language, having limited confidence using computers, and working three part-time jobs, Ruth remained committed to her education.

With support from her Employment Facilitator, Ruth explored new employment opportunities, created an online nanny profile, and successfully connected with a family. She also interviewed for a cleaning and assessment position with Restoration of Regina and was invited to attend a second interview.

Her Employment Facilitator also supported her in exploring program requirements and enrolling in a Sask Polytech course that allowed her to continue working while furthering her education. ESRP provided employment-related funding to cover a portion of her course costs, and she was connected with SSILC’s IT support to obtain an affordable laptop needed to participate in her studies. As she progressed through her coursework, Ruth gained confidence in her computer skills and her ability to independently seek information and support from Sask Polytech. She also received guidance in understanding school assignments and developing the skills needed to complete them independently.

After expressing an interest in self-employment, Ruth was referred to the EDP program for business development support. She completed her business registration to launch her own cleaning company and has secured a cleaning contract with a restaurant. Ruth continues to move forward with determination as she builds a future centered on education, independence, and entrepreneurship.
