Juno’s Story

Juno’s Post Secondary Education Success Story

Juno began working with SSILC’s Employment Program at the end of March 2025.  He is a recipient of the SIS program and is impacted by ADHD and PTSD. During the intake meeting, he shared his goal of pursuing a degree in Social Justice at the University of Regina, with classes starting in Spring 2025.

Recognizing that Juno would benefit from additional support during his studies, Juno and his Employment Facilitator (EF) applied for the Federal Disability Grant for Services and Equipment. This grant would help provide access to an ADHD coach and other tools to support his academic success.

The process of applying for the necessary grants and completing the required paperwork proved to be overwhelming. His EF provided direct support throughout the application process, including coordinating with several university departments to ensure forms were completed correctly. Juno also connected with the University of Regina’s Accessibility Services for ongoing academic accommodations.

Despite initial anxiety about his financial situation, especially since student loans were not an option, Juno proceeded with his goals. He successfully secured two grants:

  • Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities
  • Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment

Juno received $800 to cover school-related expenses such as textbooks and parking. Additionally, $1,887.10 was paid directly to the university for tuition and fees. He was also awarded $2,442.46 for equipment and services, including a printer, reader pen, digital voice recorder, academic strategist, and tutoring support.

Juno is off to a strong start; he passed his first written assignment and earned one of the top marks in his class. He has also met with his instructor to discuss his learning preferences, particularly his need for visual aids, and received a positive and supportive response.

While Juno still needs to purchase his approved equipment and connect with an academic strategist, his EF will continue to support him throughout his post-secondary journey, helping him address any challenges that may arise.
