Yonatan’s Story
Yonatan’s Journey to a New Beginning
Yonatan registered with SSILC on February 28, 2025. He is refugee from
Eritrea who arrived in Canada via Sudan, who had been working in a physically
demanding construction job for barely more than minimum wage. Determined to
build a better life, he set his sights on improving his skills and exploring
opportunities—particularly in the health care field.
Despite his exhausting work schedule, Yonatan would come to SSILC early in
the morning to meet with his employment facilitator. He spoke openly about the
trauma of fleeing a war-torn country and the pain of leaving family behind.
Still, his resolve never wavered. He was committed to creating a brighter
future.
Together with his employment facilitator, Yonatan updated his resume and
explored training opportunities. Thanks to SSILC’s Participant Support Fund, he
was able to complete the First Aid/CPR  and Personal Care Worker courses— essential
steps toward his goal. But Yonatan didn’t stop there. Eager to learn, he
embraced every chance to grow.
He was introduced to the WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information
System) course and completed it independently at home. Armed with new
knowledge, he realized his construction job lacked important safety measures,
further motivating him to seek safer, more meaningful employment.
Through continued job search efforts with his facilitator, Yonatan applied
for a care worker position at Phoenix Residential. With his First Aid/CPR
certification, driver’s license, compassion, and willingness to learn, he stood
out as a strong candidate and performed exceptionally well in his interview. He
was offered a part-time position and now looks forward to transitioning into
full-time work.
SSILC is proud of Yonatan’s progress. With his perseverance, positive attitude, and strong work ethic, there’s no doubt he has a bright future ahead in the health care field. For Yonatan, the sky’s the limit.
